ESSENDON midfielder Angus Monfries will miss at least three weeks after scans revealed a torn hamstring.
Football operations Paul Hamilton confirmed the diagnosis following the injury sustained in Saturday night's clash with Fremantle.
"There wasn't a specific incident during the game but he suffered some tightness so it is disappointing news," Hamilton said
"We need some further verification on how long he will miss but it is a definite tear and he will be out of action for the next three weeks at a minimum."
Meanwhile, Jason Winderlich will make his long-awaited return from injury in the VFL next weekend.
The 27-year-old strained his hamstring in early April and suffered complications.
Winderlich has missed more than a year since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Carlton in round four last year.
"Winderlich will be joined by one of our young recruits in Nick O'Brien who we know had the foot injury and was out for a number of weeks but will take on Coburg as well," Hamilton said.
Hamilton also ruled out any long-term concerns for big man Scott Gumbleton after he suffered concussion playing in the VFL on the weekend.
"He was a bit unfortunate, it was fairly early in the game and a player coming the other way accidentally knocked into him," he said.
"He ended up requiring twelve stitches to his mouth area so it was unfortunate but not a long term concern or problem.
"With the VFL bye this week he gets the chance to rest as he did have some mild concussion but he will be available for the next VFL game."
