Track report
Essendon is targeting round 11 as the return date for Patrick Ambrose, who injured his quad at training on the eve of the Dons' clash with Melbourne. But they will be without Mitch Brown for a little longer as he deals with an ankle problem from that Melbourne game. They should have Jobe Watson, Andy McGrath and Ben McNeice available after being rested last week, but Jayden Laverde's battle to play this season looks likely to continue. The Bombers have pushed back a return date from a pre-season ankle injury to about round 15, but it was a serious and rare injury that they'll be conservative with. - Callum Twomey

Track report
Freo will be without youngster Harley Balic this week due to illness. Star midfielder Stephen Hill is getting strength back in his running after straining a hamstring in round five and is on track to resume full training with the next fortnight. Harley Bennell's timeframe to return from his calf injury remains stuck on seven weeks, but Hayden Ballantyne is back running near top speed and should return to training later this week. Luckless big man Michael Apeness's season is over after he injured the PCL in his right knee playing for Peel's reserves at the weekend. Josh Deluca failed to get up for Peel's win over Claremont but is expected to be right for Saturday's clash with Swan Districts. - Travis King

Birchall has been awfully stiff, hurting his knee in his first quarter back after a four-week absence with a broken jaw. The Hawks still have five weeks till their bye, so he should be back before then. This is the third hamstring injury this year for O’Rourke and comes just as he was in the frame for a senior game. Track report
The Dogs will give veteran skipper Robert Murphy the week off for the trip west to face the Eagles. The club was relieved Jake Stringer avoided a dreaded ACL tear, but the dynamic forward probably won't be seen until after the club's bye in round 11. The club is hopeful Josh Dunkley will return by the end of the home and away season after his shoulder injury sustained against Richmond. Jordan Roughead is likely to play in the VFL this week in his return from a serious hamstring injury. Veterans Travis Cloke and Dale Morris have returned to training on a modified program and the key duo could be available for the round nine clash against Geelong. - Ryan Davidson
