BRISBANE Lions veteran Luke Power has declared his desire to play beyond the one-year contract he signed with the club just weeks ago.

Power, who turns 31 in January, has just embarked on the 14th pre-season campaign of his illustrious career, but says he has no intention of making 2011 his swansong.

"You are a long time retired," Power said on Tuesday. "You definitely want to play and be involved for as long as you can.

"As long as my body is willing and able and I'm getting a kick I'll definitely want to [keep playing]."

After a disastrous year on the field, salary cap issues off it meant Power and fellow triple-premiership player Simon Black had to wait until well after the season had finished before signing one-year deals.

Power has previously admitted he would have liked the security of a two-year extension, but he harbours no ill will toward the club that he joined as the fifth overall pick at the 1997 NAB AFL Draft.

"I think it's a lot better to be in contract as a sports person than out of contract and I just think those negotiations are part of what happens in the weeks before [a deal is done]," he said of the protracted talks.

"It was nothing that hasn't happened over the last 13 or 14 years of my career. It was nothing new really. People tend to make more of it than what it is."

Those same salary cap issues saw Justin Sherman, Jared Brennan and Michael Rischitelli depart the club with the latter duo moving down the highway to new local rivals Gold Coast Suns.

"It definitely hurt the club," Power said of the defections.

"They were our next group of leaders. Those blokes were hopefully going to be the ones to lead the club and drive it forward.

"They were really good people to have around the club too. They were great personalities, but I certainly don't knock them for what they have done."

Power says he will be happy to catch up with the pair after the first local derby in round seven next season, but he took the opportunity to have a bit of fun with the new kids on the block.

"I saw a quote on the way to training this morning that said 'There are two great teams in Liverpool - Liverpool and Liverpool Reserves'," he said.

"I think at the moment there are two great teams in Queensland - the Brisbane Lions and the Brisbane Lions reserves.

"We want to make it into a derby ... we want to make it into a great rivalry."

While Power admitted beating the Suns would be particularly sweet, he said it was just one of many goals for a team he feels can hit back hard after finishing 13th in 2010.

"We're a proud club. We've got a lot of great history and we're looking to turn it around," he said.

"It was only the season before last that we finished [sixth]. If everything goes right for us then I can't see any reason why we can't make the finals.

"It was such a disappointing year for the club and it wasn't my greatest year. To get back out the on the biggest stage that there is and play some good footy and get the club back to where it should be is definitely something that is driving the group."
