Xavier Clarke was among a handful of Lions players who experienced nervous moments over the past few days, but considers himself lucky compared with the thousands of people whose homes and lives have been destroyed by the floods.
“I live pretty close to the water, so as a precaution I got my stuff out and have stayed at Amon Buchanan’s house for the past couple of nights,” Clarke said.
“I had Browny and the crew over at my place on Wednesday sandbagging the doors and the back courtyard.”
“We were lucky enough that the water didn’t come up as high as expected. At high tide the water stopped around 2-3 metres from my front door,” he said.
“So in the scheme of things, I’m really lucky.”
“We’ve got more than 40 players on our list and if you look at the statistics, we’re really fortunate not to have any of the boys’ houses go under.”
“There are a lot of people out there doing it tough, so we’re just keen to get out there and lend a hand where we can.”
“The flood has had an amazing effect on Brisbane as a whole. As a footy club, we back the community and our support is out there for everyone.”
