SYDNEY Swans coach Paul Roos believes his red-hot side has plenty of improvement left after racking up a fifth successive win on Saturday night.
The Swans disposed of St Kilda by 35 points in clinical fashion, establishing a four-goal lead in the second term that they never let slip.
And key forward Barry Hall is a major part of Roos’ plans for the rest of the season.
In a game that featured few highlights, Hall’s return from injury and a seven-week suspension brought a smile to Roos’ face.
Hall finished with 13 kicks, 11 marks and two goals in a solid performance that Roos described as “sharp”.
“[Max] Hudghton’s a good player and he’s probably done pretty well on ‘Hally’ in the past, so it was a pretty good first up test for him after seven weeks,” Roos said.
“He ran out of a little bit of gas and even some of his kicks dropped a little bit short because of a lack of match fitness [but] he’d be pretty pleased with his first game.”
The Swans coach said the club’s leadership group had been “really honest” with Hall about his hit on West Coast’s Brent Staker that led to his suspension.
“But equally, once it was all over, they made sure that they told him they wanted him back in the team and they respected him.
“Obviously it was something they didn’t want to happen; it did, and now it’s time to get on with it and support him as the players did tonight.”
The rest of the Swans forwards thrived in Hall’s presence, with Ryan O’Keefe, Michael O’Loughlin and Adam Goodes sharing eight goals.
Roos had particular praise for O’Loughlin who continues to turn back the clock to career-best form in this, his 14th season.
“You can see how dangerous Mick is because he starts to get the opposition’s third or fourth best [defender]. He took some terrific marks, Mick, and kicked some real crucial goals when the momentum was going the other way,” he said.
The Swans face bottom team Melbourne at Canberra’s Manuka Oval next week and Roos said it was a crucial test for his players, despite the disparity between the two teams’ ladder positions.
“If we can get over the line against Melbourne and beat them, it’s a really big challenge,” he said. “That will give us six in a row and then we have a weekend off and the guys can regroup a bit. Next week’s a massive game for us to make sure we capitalise.”
