The successful candidate will provide leadership and direction to umpires of all disciplines and appoint and manage the selection of umpires in all AFL Cairns fixture matches, recruit and retain umpires, develop and maintain relationships with Clubs and coaches, assist game development staff, develop an umpiring business plan and administer an umpiring budget, educate regarding laws and interpretation, actively promote AFL Cairns Umpires Association, coordinate umpiring functions and events, order stock and supplies for umpires.
The successful candidate will be a current or previous Level 1 Accredited AFL Field Umpire, have highly developed interpersonal communication skills, be currently or willing to participate in AFL Umpire Coach Professional Development Program, have sound administration and technology skills, be willing to work flexible hours - including evenings and weekends, hold a current drivers licence and current working with children ‘Blue Card’ (or ability to obtain same). A tertiary qualification and previous experience in a similar role would be advantageous but not essential.

Job/Task Profile
UMPIRE MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
a. To provide leadership and direction to all umpires appointed to all AFL Cairns fixtures, Finals and Grand Finals including:
• The development and implementation of umpire selection and appointment policy to ensure standards are outlined and performance management initiatives are in place.
• The preparation of an annual program for all umpires including skills, knowledge and development sessions.
• Attending all formal pre-season and in-season training sessions at training venues to supervise the training and skill development of umpires.
• Regularly reviewing all umpire panels and the conduct umpire reviews as required.
• Preparation and conduct of regular lectures to all umpires during in-season competition to ensure a consistent and high standard of umpiring is achieved and maintained.
• Maintain appropriate season match statistics for umpires.
• Attend games and events as required to observe and coach umpires as appropriate.
APPOINTMENTS
a. To directly appoint/manage a selection committee to appoint umpires to pre season, in season and special appointments as they arise to the following
• AFL Cairns Seniors
• AFL Cairns Reserves
• AFL Cairns Womens
• AFL Cairns Juniors (Under 12’s to Under 18’s)
b. Ensure appropriate recruitment and retention strategies are in place to sufficiently cover all aforementioned appointments.
ASSISTANT STAFF, COACHES AND OBSERVERS
a. To coordinate all match day observers and observations for AFL Cairns competitions including:
• Recruitment, training, support and coordination of a panel of observers
• Coordination, collection and archiving of all match day observations, match sheets and performance summaries.
• Provide match performance feedback to umpires as appropriate and in a timely manner
• Ensure the AFL Cairns Manager is advised of any incidents, reports and incident referrals as soon as possible after the completion of matches.
PROGRAMS
a. Assist Game development staff with the AFL programs such as Auskick, Schools programs, etc.
b. Ensure the effective delivery of AFLQ umpire programs such as Club Umpire Program, School Academy program and Junior Football Umpire Program, etc.
c. Ensure all AFL driven umpire programs are effectively delivered including, Green shirt program, Mentor Program, and Umpire Accreditation, etc.
FINANCIAL
a. Develop an umpiring business plan
b. Create and administer an umpiring budget.
c. Data entry of all match payments requirements for AFL Cairns umpires into the payroll database.
d. Process all umpire work cover claims
TRIBUNAL
a. Ensure that tribunals are familiar with any changes in laws or interpretations.
b. Assist as part of the AFL Cairns Match Review Committee in reviewing any incidents as required.
ADDITIONAL
a. Actively promote AFL Cairns Umpires Association to potential sponsors.
b. Coordinate Umpiring functions such as season launch, Green shirt recognition, etc as required.
c. Order all necessary stock for AFL Cairns umpires such as uniforms, paperwork, resources etc.
