Another sold out Peter Mac Cup Breakfast at Zinc in Federation Square confirmed the great rivalry between Carlton and Collingwood is still alive and well. It also confirmed that both clubs are prepared to work together in support of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Federation in the battle against cancer.

The Peter Mac Cup commenced in 1993 and each year one match between Carlton and Collingwood is played for the Peter Mac Cup (Carlton home game in even years and Collingwood home game in odd years). In the 14 matches played to date, Carlton has won nine and Collingwood has won five, including last year’s match. During this time over $400,000 has been raised for the Peter MacCallum Foundation for use in vital cancer research.

Both Carlton and Collingwood are proud to be associated with the Peter Mac Cup and encourage all supporters to show their support of Peter Mac and make a donation toward this important cause. Fans at the game will be able to donate with over 500 volunteers from HMAS Cerberus, members from the Rotary Club of East Keilor and Peter Mac staff, family and friends rattling tins around the MCG. For those not attending the game donations may be made by the telephone on 1800 111 440 or by logging onto the Peter Mac Website at www.petermac.org

Both the Peter Mac Cup Breakfast and the Peter Mac Cup game are important fundraisers for Peter Mac as well as being important events to raise awareness of the Peter MacCallum Foundation and the vital cancer research that Peter Mac continues to be involved with.

The feature of the breakfast was the panel featuring Stephen Kernahan, Denis Pagan and Lance Whitnall along with Collingwood President Eddie McGuire, coach Michael Malthouse and captain Nathan Buckley. As well as discussing the upcoming game and the great Carlton Collingwood rivalry, there was plenty of talk about the game in general. MC Tiffany Cherry raised the recent criticism of umpires which drew varied responses along the lines of the following.Pagan: don’t waste my time criticising umpires or issues I have no control overMalthouse: Four coaches have been asked for a please explain and a possible fine and I am not going to make it fiveMcGuire was very tongue in cheek: we think they do a great job.

Guests at the breakfast were among the first to know that Anthony Koutoufides had been given the all clear to return this weekend and Denis Pagan also confirmed that when Nick Stevens is back at the Club he will be involved with the coaching panel and knows that Nick will be of great assistance to the young Carlton midfield.

Carlton v Collinwood

The Carlton Collingwood rivalry is older than the AFL with the teams first meeting in 1892 at Victoria Park when Carlton won 3.13.31 to 2.11.23. They played 12 matches prior to the AFL commencing in 1897 with Collingwood winning eight and Carlton four. During this period nine matches were played at Victoria Park, two at University Cricket Ground and one, round 7 in 1894 was played at the MCG.

The first AFL match between Carlton and Collingwood in the AFL was held on June 22nd, 1897 and it was the first ever match played at Princes Park. It was round 7 of the season and at that stage the ground was fenced but had no buildings. The opening was described as a gala occasion with the MCC’s Alderman Moloney giving the ground its baptism of football by kicking the first ball ever kicked on the oval as the players from both teams lined up and gave three cheers for the Queen. Of course the last time these teams met at Princes Park was in round 18, 2000 in what was promoted as the “Last Suburban Battle” with Carlton winning by 111-points.

Since 1993 one match each season between the two teams has been played for the Peter Mac Cup (Carlton home games in even years and Collingwood home games in odd years). Collingwood won the Peter Mac Cup in 2006 giving it 5 wins while the Blues have won the Peter Mac Cup on 9 occasions since 1993.

The Magpies won both matches in 2006 to improve their overall winning percentage against Carlton however the Blues still hold the advantage in the 233 AFL matches played between the two teams:
