Last time they met
The Swans came into the match looking to add to their eleven-game winning streak against Carlton. The Blues had other ideas as they started the game in blistering fashion, dominating the midfield and having plenty of chances in front of goal. Some errant kicking by Carlton ensured the Swans would stay in reach at quarter time, trailing by only five behinds.
With Carlton again getting on top of the clearances at the start of the second term, a change was needed. And that change came in the form of Jarrad McVeigh, who was put on Blues’ skipper Chris Judd. The result was telling as McVeigh kicked two goals in as many minutes while keeping Judd’s hands clear of the ball. Carlton again wasted their opportunities in front of goal, kicking seven behinds for the quarter as the Swans put on four goals.
With 100-gamer Rhyce Shaw (29 disposals) and Lewis Roberts-Thomson (15 touches) cleaning up in defence, the Swans found the drive they needed to extend their half-time lead. Both clubs kicked three goals apiece in an even third quarter.
In a day that saw ten different goal scorers for the home side, the Swans had missed some opportunities in front of goal, but still ensured a hard-fought 17-point victory.
