CHEEKY Brisbane Lions small forward Dayne Zorko says he pinched his post-goal celebration on Saturday night from Australia's cricketers of the 1970s and '80s.
Zorko had spectators scratching their heads after both of his goals against Greater Western Sydney, when he and his teammates raced to each other and offered a rather formal handshake.
Zorko said he and running half-back Mitch Golby had devised the celebration at training the previous afternoon and it took off from there.
"We were just mucking around on Friday in a bit of free time after training and he came up to me and shook my hand after I kicked a goal and we thought 'that could actually work'," Zorko said.
"Then Ash McGrath said 'yeah, that could work'.
"We got it off the old school World Series Cricket when a bowler got a wicket, they'd only shake their hands, they wouldn't high five. It'd all be a handshake and a nod. That's how it all came about."
Zorko said knowledge of the celebration was confined to the forwards with McGrath, Daniel Merrett, Brent Staker, Rohan Bewick and Josh Green all in on the joke.
He said fans would "have to wait and see" if the celebration got another run, but it was likely to stay under raps.
"It was just something to boost the morale of the boys, obviously it was a hard week," he said, referring to the sacking of coach Michael Voss.
"We've just got to get on now, that was a bit of fun and giggle."
Zorko said the forward line was enjoying the task of creating options without injured co-captain Jonathan Brown.
"All the other players have got to pick up the slack. We're there as a six, not as a one," he said.
"We've all tried to put our hand up and help out. Jonny used to be the number one target and now everyone has to work together and create another option for our midfielders to kick to."
