A review of Round 4 in the Coates Talent League Boys competition, which featured nine matches across an action-packed weekend.

Sandringham Dragons moved four points clear at the top of the ladder after accounting for the GWS Giants Academy by 57 points at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. The reigning premiers remain the only unbeaten team across the opening four rounds of the season. They held sway all game against a persistent Giants outfit, before blowing the winning margin open with a six-goal to two final term. Bottom-age midfielder Levi Ashcroft had a day out, amassing 35 disposals, two goals and eight inside-50s, while Billy McGee Galimberti (26 disposals, six rebound-50s) also had a big impact. Miles Enders kicked multiple goals for the fourth-successive match, finishing with an equal-high three goals along with Murphy Reid. The Giants were well served by Daniel Gauci and Jack Glanville, while Charlie McCormack booted three majors.

Oakleigh Chargers scored their second win of the season with a runaway 54-point triumph over the Sydney Swans Academy at the Swinburne Centre. After a tight first half, the Chargers were able to break the game open with eight goals to two after the main break. Jagga Smith was prolific with 37 disposals, nine inside-50s and two goals, with great support from Finn O’Sullivan (29 disposals, five tackles), Tom Gross (34 disposals, one goal) and Kynan Brown (18 disposals, seven tackles, one goal). Joe Harrison had his best game for the Swans, finishing with 28 touches and a goal, while ruckman Caleb May (36 hitouts) and James Lugsdin also played well.

Tasmania Devils won an entertaining battle against Eastern Ranges at University of Tasmania Stadium. The Devils trailed by seven points at the main break after kicking a wayward 4.10 in the first half but straightened up in the second half to overcome their visitors by 19 points. James Leake, Harry Summers and Liam Ling all played a major part in the win, while Heath Ollington finished with 20 disposals and booted 2.4. Tyson Sruk enjoyed a strong outing for the Ranges, while Joshua Davies and Riley Weatherill (four goals) provided great support.

Western Jets opened their winning account with a hard-fought 19-point win over Brisbane Lions Academy at Swinburne Centre. The Jets’ set up the win in the third term when they booted six unanswered goals to turn a three-point deficit at half time into a 31-point advantage heading into the final term. Logan Morris was in dominant form, booting five goals, including three in the third term, to take his tally for the season to 13. Massimo Raso and Jake Smith also enjoyed solid outings, while Diesel Moloney had a team-high 25 disposals. Nathan Jensen and Samuel Marshall were best for the Lions.

Bendigo Pioneers jumped into third place on the ladder after accounting for Gippsland Power in the first game of a triple-header at Queen Elizabeth Oval on Sunday. The Pioneers did their work early, kicking the opening five goals of the game to take a 29-point lead into half time. The second half was a much closer affair, with the Power outscoring the Pioneers by five goals to three, however the damage had been done. Oskar Smartt was involved in the thick of the action for Bendigo, finishing with 16 disposals, eight tackles and kicking 3.2. James Barrat, Oliver Poole and Tobie Travaglia also featured in the Pioneers’ best players, while Xavier Lindsay (27 disposals, eight marks) and Ryan Maric (three goals) did their best to work the Power back into the game.

Geelong Falcons got the better of Murray Bushrangers in the second match at Queen Elizabeth Oval. The Falcons bounced back from their close Round 4 defeat to the GWV Rebels with an impressive 44-point triumph, which was set up with a nine-goal to three opening half. Ethan Borys racked up 25 possessions, while Joe Pike had a great all-round game with 20 hitouts, 10 disposals and a goal. Zac MicInnes had the greatest impact up forward with four majors. For the Bushrangers, Caleb Clemson burrowed in, along with Angus Murray and Phoenix Gothard.

Dandenong Stingrays secured its third win on the trot with a 34-point win over the previously unbeaten GWV Rebels in the third game of the triple-header. The sides traded goals in an even first half, before the Stingrays took control in the third quarter, booting six-successive goals in the space of 12 minutes to take a 22-point lead into the final quarter and stretching that advantage in the last stanza. Kade De La Rue, Cooper Hynes, Harvey Langford and Billy Wilson all found plenty of the ball, while Jacob Grant and Ziggy Toledo each booted three goals. Despite being on the losing side, Joel Freijah produced the game’s eye-catching performance. He kicked six goals from 26 possessions and laid seven tackles. Sam Lalor (26 possessions) and Luamon Lual also gave their all.

Calder Cannons put in a powerful performance against the Northern Territory Academy in their clash at Highgate Recreation Reserve. The Cannons kicked ten goals in each of the first and fourth quarters, with their final tally of 30.18 (198) the highest score kicked in the competition since 2005. Isaac Kako, Amin Naim and Jordan Croft combined for 19 goals, while Mahmoud Taha had a game-high 36 disposals. Waylon Davey booted two goals for Northern Territory Academy, with Andrew Green and Taj Stanley the team’s leading ball winners with 20.

Northern Knights got the jump on Gold Coast Suns Academy and never looked back in the second game of the Highgate Recreation Reserve double-header. The Knights’ third win of the season was locked away on the back of eight unanswered goals in the first half. The Suns were much more competitive after the main break, despite the home side still winning the second half with eight goals to three. Flynn Riley had a monster game in the ruck, winning 37 hitouts, 21 disposals and a goal for the victors. He was well supported by defender Parker Heatley and the industrious Charlie Opie. The 16 goals were well shared, with Adam Galgano and Rohan McKenzie each finishing with three. Leonardo Lombard had a match-high 30 disposals for the Suns.

Match replays are available on the Coates Talent League app. Replays are also available at AFL On Demand by Tuesday following each round.
