After being delisted by the Brisbane Lions at the end of 2010, 24 year-old ruckman Broc McCauley might have thought his chance at an AFL career had passed.

McCauley was recruited to the Club as a mature-age rookie at the end of 2009 after dominating the local QAFL competition with the Southport Sharks. He proved a handy addition to the Lions Reserves side but was ultimately let go after his first - and only - season with the Lions.

However, McCauley was invited back to train with the team during the pre-season and earned his spot back onto the rookie list last December.

He lined up for his first senior appearance with the Lions in the first round of the NAB Cup and has since shouldered the team’s ruck load in further practice matches against the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne.

The absence of Matthew Leuenberger (rested) and Jamie Charman (achilles) coupled with Mitch Clark’s move up forward has meant that McCauley has been given far greater responsibility.

And he has certainly performed his role.

Matched up against the likes of All-Australian ruckman Mark Jamar from the Demons and experienced Bulldogs pair Ben Hudson and Will Minson, McCauley’s efforts have earned the praise of Senior Coach Michael Voss.

Now he approaches the 2011 season with greater optimism that a senior opportunity could potentially present itself.

“Being a rookie, you obviously have to take every opportunity that presents itself,” McCauley said.

“Having a big pre-season always helps and going up against terrific players like Jamar is a great experience.”

“If I can come into the side at some stage throughout the year to help out Matty Leuenberger, that would be fantastic,” he said.

McCauley said he has received great support from his more senior team-mates which has helped fast-track his football education.

“Last weekend it was great having guys like Luke Power and Simon Black in the side. It always helps when you have someone like Blacky to tap the ball to.”

“Jamie Charman, who has had a bad run of injuries, has also been a great support from the sidelines.”
