Sidebottom flies as nine Magpies run PBs in time trial
Injury concerns a thing of the past as Magpie draftees get moving
COLLINGWOOD'S list is in a far healthier state than this time last year, and it is showing on the training track, says coach Nathan Buckley.
The Magpies were decimated by injury throughout 2014, emphasised by the 19 players sitting on the club's injury list by the end of the season.
The club identified the need for change and brought in several consultants to get to the bottom of the soft-tissue injury crisis that plagued their year.
Buckley said the club had made a concerted effort to manage each player's individual training load this pre-season.
"We're really happy with where we've got our players," Buckley said on Monday.
"We've got far more players on the track and getting more football work in than we were this time last year.
"We're in relatively good shape compared to this time last year."
Nine players ran personal best times in the club's 2km time trial on Monday, which was again won by aerobic standout Steele Sidebottom, who edged out Nathan Freeman and Tony Armstrong.
Jordan De Goey, the club's first-round draft pick (No.5 overall) was a clear standout in the competitive drills that followed the run, while Cat-turned-Pie Travis Varcoe's tackling pressure was also impressive.
"It's a massive step up from TAC (Cup) - we're just trying to make the right impression," De Goey said as he and the other seven Collingwood draftees fronted the media on Monday.
"The best way to gain respect from your teammates is on the track. You can talk to them as much as you want off the track, but it's when you get on and show them what you can really do and how you can support them and back them up that's how you gain their trust."
Buckley said young forward Tim Broomhead, who trained away from the main group on Monday, was being managed after a solid first month at the club.
Jonathon Marsh (hamstring) and Matt Scharenberg (knee) are continuing their rehab and also jogged laps on Monday morning.
Brent Macaffer has had some soreness in the hamstring graft, which was used to reconstruct his torn ACL, so the Magpies have backed off his training slightly.
