MATTHEW Lloyd believes Hawthorn star Lance Franklin has enough natural talent to make kicking a ton an annual event.

The Essendon skipper labelled the young Hawks champ a “freak” and “one out of the box”.

Lloyd, himself a three-time Coleman medallist who booted centuries in 1998 and 2000, said while the days of forwards reaching three figures had become rarer in recent years, Franklin’s freakish ability to win the ball meant he was less reliant on a strong midfield and therefore far more capable of topping the goalkicking for seasons to come.

“I think if you’re the typical full-forward like [Brendan] Fevola you really need a good midfield for it to happen, whereas with Franklin, we’re just lucky that we’re fortunate to see a new superstar that’s playing the game,” Lloyd said on Wednesday.

“He’s just one out of the box who plays as a half-forward but gets enough of the ball to kick or have 10 shots a game.

“So he’s an absolute freak who could do it [kick a hundred goals] year after year the way he’s going.”

As for the AFL’s crackdown on banning the crowd from running on the field should Franklin or Fevola reach the magical 100-goal mark in coming weeks, Lloyd backed his earlier claims that he understood the league’s decision but thought it would cause some disappointment.

“I can understand why they’d [the AFL] want to do it because it only takes one person to do something quite serious but if it could be guaranteed that it wasn’t going to happen I’m all for it,” Lloyd said.

“I loved every minute of it [when the crowd ran onto the field].

Lloyd said the first occasion he kicked his 100th goal the match had been disrupted for 10 to 15 minutes.

“The second time around I was off the ground within two or three minutes by security, the crowd enjoyed it and there was no harm,” he said.

“So I reckon if you’re ready to go and the security are ready to get Franklin or Fevola off the ground, the fans get their fun and so does Fevola… I’m sure those two guys would love for it to happen if you asked them also.”
