MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Australian Football League Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou today confirmed the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final replay would be played at 2.30pm this Saturday 2nd October.

At a media conference in Melbourne this morning, Mr Demetriou said tickets would go on sale to club members at 9am tomorrow, Monday 27th September, with tickets on sale to AFL members at 9am on Tuesday 28th September.

“It is the AFL’s intention that there will be some 40,000 tickets made available to the club members of St Kilda and Collingwood, along with the supporters of those clubs that are placed within both the AFL Members’ Reserve and the MCC Members’ Reserve.

“Any tickets that are not sold to club members will then go on sale to the general public at 9am on Wednesday 29th September,” he said.

Mr Demetriou said the AFL Commission would decide by circular resolution tomorrow that the Grand Final replay would have the provision for extra time to be played, should scores be tied at the end of normal time.

“It is the view of the AFL commission that it is not appropriate to ask the teams to come back for a third week, to decide the 2010 AFL Premiership.

“However, the AFL is of the view that a drawn Grand Final is a significant part of our game, and part of what makes our sport, as Australia’s only indigenous game, so unique, along with our scoring system, the shape of our ball and the shape of our ground.

“All clubs, players, fans and supporters are aware that we will always replay a drawn Grand Final, and yesterday’s match at the MCG is a significant piece of history for all those who were in attendance.”
