The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the matches in the NAB Challenge, played between February 18-23. The following charges were laid:

Charges Laid:

Patrick McGinnity, West Coast, has been charged with a Level Two Engaging in Rough Conduct Offence (225 demerit points, two-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Danyle Pearce, Fremantle, during the fourth quarter of the NAB Challenge match between West Coast and Fremantle played at Joondalup on Tuesday February 18, 2014.

In summary, when considering his previous poor record, his two-match sanction can be reduced to a one-match penalty with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Fremantle Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two Offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of three matches suspended within the last two years, increasing the penalty by 10 per cent to 247.50 points. He also has 14.06 points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 261.56 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 196.17 points and a one-match sanction.

David Armitage, St Kilda, has been charged with a First Offence for Making Reckless Contact with an Umpire ($2600 sanction) for making reckless contact with umpire Andrew Mitchell during the second quarter of the NAB Challenge match between St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs, played at Simonds Stadium on Wednesday February 19, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a $1950 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for making reckless contact with an umpire is a $2600 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $1950 sanction.

Mitch Hallahan, Hawthorn, has been charged with a First Offence for Making Negligent Contact with an Umpire ($1200 sanction) for making negligent contact with umpire Troy Pannell during the third quarter of the NAB Challenge match between Hawthorn and North Melbourne, played at Aurora Stadium on Friday February 21, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for making reckless contact with an umpire is a $1200 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $900 sanction.

Timmy Sumner, Gold Coast Suns, has been charged with a Level One Engaging in Rough Conduct Offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Tom Rockliff, Brisbane Lions, during the second quarter of the NAB Challenge match between the Gold Coast Suns and the Brisbane Lions played at Townsville on Sunday February 23, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Brisbane Lions Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.

Other Incidents Assessed:

Contact between Fremantle’s Tendai Mzungu and West Coast’s Murray Newman from the second quarter of Tuesday’s match was assessed. The ball was loose in front of Newman with Mzungu coming towards the contest from the opposite direction. Newman bends to pick up the ball and fumbles it, before lunging forward to knock the ball to a team mate. There is a collision between the two players. It was the view of the panel that Mzungu had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.
