One of the Brisbane Lions’ biggest events of 2011 was the celebration of arguably the most significant moment in Club history.
This year marked the 10-year anniversary of the Lions’ triumphant 2001 AFL Grand Final victory over Essendon, and the Club acknowledged the feat with a black-tie event in Brisbane on Friday 18 March.
21 of the 22 players who represented the Brisbane Lions during their breakthrough Premiership joined the entire 2011 playing list for the historic occasion.
For the players who have since retired from AFL, it proved an opportunity to reconnect with their former team-mates and reflect on their achievement.
For the current Lions players who weren’t part of that success, it provided them with an invaluable insight into the greatest team of the modern AFL era.
And for the Lions fans who shared in the spoils of victory, the occasion gave them a reason to re-live those fond memories that will forever be cherished.
While the current Lions’ 2011 campaign failed to emulate that of their predecessors from a decade ago, the event proved a worthwhile history lesson on what is required to become a truly great team.
Fortunately, the Lions’ sustained period of Premiership success means that the Club will continue celebrating the anniversary of such past achievements for the next couple of years.
