The West Coast Eagles player leadership structure for the 2009 season was last night endorsed by the board after a recommendation from the club’s match committee based on the views of the players.

The playing group expects each other to show leadership and as was the case last season, they voted on a range of criteria for the 2009 senior leadership group.

Darren Glass will enter his second season as captain with his deputy being 2008 Club Champion and three-time all-Australian ruckman Dean Cox. Tyson Stenglein, who shared the vice-captaincy role last season, will remain part of the senior leadership group.

The only other change to the leadership structure is that Beau Waters has been elevated from the junior leadership group, replacing centre half-forward Ashley Hansen.

“Our vision and values are constantly evolving and these changes reflect this,” senior coach John Worsfold said.

“Darren Glass has proven to be an outstanding captain and continues to grow in the role. The elevation of Beau Waters recognises his growth as an individual in the last couple of years.

“I would also like to acknowledge Ashley Hansen’s efforts last season. In one of the most challenging years for the player leadership group, he was integral in moving the club’s culture forward to where we wanted to take it.”

Other members of the senior leadership group are Adam Selwood and Matt Priddis.
