SAM Newman's television career is not over yet.

The Footy Show star had a meeting with Channel Nine bosses, including chief executive Hugh Marks, in Melbourne on Thursday.

It was agreed discussions with the Geelong champion would continue.

"We agreed with Sam we would continue to look at opportunities together for 2019, discussions are ongoing," a Nine spokesperson told AFL.com.au

In its 25th year, The Footy Show has suffered from flagging ratings amid fierce competition from Channel Seven's The Front Bar

The low-budget newcomer with Andy Maher, Mick Molloy and Sam Pang began its path to primetime success as a weekly show on AFL.com.au

SAM SAYS BYE?  Newman's future uncertain

Even the return of original host Eddie McGuire hasn't been able to save The Footy Show from its dramas this year.

The network has already indicated that whatever it puts in the 8:30 Thursday night slot in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia next season will be AFL-related, but it it's unlikely to be The Footy Show in its present format.

A stumbling block for Nine – which doesn't hold AFL broadcast rights – could be the possibility of up to 13 AFL games on Thursday nights next season.

Newman has had a controversial career at Nine, having started his media career at Seven, but the polarising 72-year-old may yet have a TV future.
