Jamie Charman and Daniel Merrett are among a selection of Lions players, coaches and staff who have joined major sponsor Vodafone in the mammoth month of moustache – Movember.

The Lions are growing moustaches as part of ‘Team Modafone’ throughout the month of November to help raise funds and awareness around the life-threatening male issues of prostate cancer and depression.

Team Modafone broke records by raising more than $100,000 last year and are hoping to achieve an even greater result in 2008.

Charman and Merrett united for a moustache re-style under the expert guidance of Movember spokesman Rob Treharne at Pure Man Barber in Brisbane’s CBD last Friday.

The Lions duo primped, pampered and gained some useful advice on how to best manage their facial fuzz.

“It’s probably not the most attractive thing in the world,” Charman said of his moustache.

“But it’s a really worthy cause and if growing a moustache for a month helps raise money and awareness for men’s health issues then it’s definitely worth it.”

Merrett echoed Charman’s sentiments that raising the awareness of such issues is vitally important.

“I’ve only recently found out that prostate cancer is the second largest cause of male cancer deaths,” Merrett said.

“But apparently there is a high survival rate if it’s diagnosed early – so it’s really important for guys to get checked regularly.”

“My moustache is starting to take good shape and is giving some of the boys a good laugh at the Club,” he said.

“I don’t think it is a look that I would continue with during the actual footy season though.”
