GEELONG coach Mark Thompson has moved to diffuse simmering tensions created by the ongoing Gary Ablett saga.

With his every public word dissected and analysed for some insight into his thoughts on Ablett's future, Thompson refused to fuel the fire of speculation on Tuesday.

"I just don't want to say too much because I feel like I get bashed over the head everytime I open my mouth. I think it's a little bit unfair," Thompson said from Skilled Stadium.

"Everybody's got a comment about Gary Ablett but to be honest our players just want to concentrate on this year when Gary's here.

"We're going to try and get the best out of him and let's hope it doesn't distract Gary too much."

The Cats have an extra day's break on this week's opponent Melbourne with the Demons also coming off a long trip to Darwin where they played in stifling heat.

However, Thompson promised his side would not take Saturday's clash lightly.

"If we went to Darwin last week we would have smashed the recovery and done everything we possibly could to get them up and Melbourne will be doing that," he said.

"So we've got to go into the game saying that that's not an advantage at all. If it works out that way then great, but going into the game we've got to say that Melbourne are going to come out and be fine to play the game."

Thompson indicated that the culture around the club - one of consistency regardless of opponent or occasion - would serve the team well in coming off last Friday's blockbuster against the Magpies.

"As much as we were looking forward to last week we've got to get ourselves up to look forward to this week too ad that's a skill in itself."

Extra work will also be put into the Geelong players after three light weeks on the track.

A conservative approach with the injuries to Brad Ottens and Joel Corey will see them out of action until after the split round, while Max Rooke has no date set for his return from a knee injury.

"I think the most important thing that we're concentrating on is going through the stages and making sure that he does get back," Thompson said.

"At the moment there's still plenty of time. He's a very, very important player for us because he's as hard as nails and he really does help our team play well.

"We're not panicking at this stage; we still think he has a really good opportunity to come back into the team."
