Rising star Scott Pendlebury has emerged during the pre-season as a player ready to take the next step in the midfield, and on Thursday he spoke to CTV about the upcoming practice match against Richmond and the season ahead.

The 19-year-old impressed during nine senior games in his debut season last year after being taken with the fifth overall selection in the 2005 AFL Draft, and is relishing the greater midfield responsibility he has shouldered in the 2007 practice matches.

It (the 2007 campaign so far) is a lot better than last year, when I played little bits in the midfield, but most of the time bench, then midfield”, Pendlebury said.

“But now it’s predominantly the midfield, and I’ve found it great, a lot more contact, and you’re always around the footy, so it’s good.”

With another pre-season behind him, he now feels like he’s physically able to match it with more senior players.

“I just feel a lot fitter and stronger, you can run with everyone out on the track, so it’s good, you’re not struggling.”

Collingwood’s final practice match of the 2007 pre-season will take place this Friday when the Magpies meet Richmond in Mildura. When asked abou the contest Pendlebury said he simply wants to contribute and take another step towards round one selection.

“Just get through it, hopefully, get through it and play well, and have a good lead up to round one if I’m playing, so it’s a good chance now to stick my hand up with a good performance on the weekend.
