The teams for Round 11 of the rebel VFLW.
Alicia Bertrand’s comeback to football will be complete in a true pressure-cooker atmosphere when she runs out for her first rebel VFLW game in almost four years in Casey Demons’ must-win clash with Geelong at Deakin University on Saturday.
Bertrand, who took a break from the game after the 2019 season before returning with South East Women’s League (and former VFLW) club Seaford this year, has been called up for her first game since Round 14 of that year with the Demons needing a win over the ladder-leader to stay in finals contention.
She has been joined in the Demons’ team by a debutant in Steph Barnett, 18, who has been called up from VAFA club Old Melburnians, with the pair covering India Makai’s return to Gippsland Power and Ella Dempster’s omission.
The Cats will again be without goalkicker Olivia Cicolini, whose troublesome hamstring is playing up again, while Emma Gilligan has an ankle injury and Ingrid Houtsma and Brooke Plummer were rested.
Mia Fuller and Cheryl De Groot are back for the Cats, Laura Ryan has forced her way in for her first game of the year and Geelong Amateurs player Olivia Stewart will debut.
Williamstown regains star midfielder Jasmine Kawa as it aims to continue the best run in its short history in a daunting task against Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday.
The Seagulls have won five of their past seven games, having not tasted three wins in a season previously, and could climb into the top six if Kawa and fellow returnee Brittney Gray can help them to another upset triumph.
But it won’t be easy, with the Hawks recalling experienced pair Charlotte Hammans and Chantella Perera but losing Jess Trend to her sore achilles and Chloe Bailey to a shin problem.
Carlton will look to reclaim a top six spot after a heavy defat against the Seagulls last week, but the challenge will also be massive against the second-placed Southern Saints at IKON Park.
The Blues will be without Elizabeth Hosking (calf) and Maddy Hendrie (rested), with former Port Melbourne player Jess Joyce to play her first game for the club and youngster Joyce Dunne her second.
The stingy Saints, who can be almost impossible to score against, have regained Jemma Webster and Emma Stuber and recalled Michelle Podnecky and Ilena Gentile.
The resurgent Western Bulldogs dealt a huge blow to Collingwood’s top-two chances last week and will aim to repeat the dose against Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium.
The Bulldogs, who are sharing the venue with the Borough this year and only lost to them by three points earlier in the season, regain Trinity Skenderis and Jayde Hutchinson and have plucked Swans Academy teenager London Ashcroft from Sydney AFL club Manly-Warringah for a VFLW debut.
Port regains the services of stars Beth Wilson and Kaitlyn O’Keefe, with former Bulldog gun Eliza Morrison being unavailable against her old club and Steph Williams rested.
Collingwood has a debutant for its game against Darebin Falcons at Genis Steel Oval, with Clayton’s Evangelia Nikolitsas, 28, winning her first Magpies guernsey alongside Riley Christgoergl, Tricia Cowan and Amy Kane.
The Falcons have recalled ruck Sally Lynch and defender Bec Goring, but will be without key player Emma Mackay.
Essendon and North Melbourne each have debutants for their game at NEC Hangar on Sunday, with the Bombers calling up Maribyrnong Park teenager Lily Bateman and the Kangaroos naming Fitzroy product Zara Flanigan but losing the rested Charli Granville and Sophia McCarthy.
All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.
Casey Radio 97.7FM will be taking the Carlton vs Southern Saints game as part of their VFLW/VFL double header coverage at IKON Park.
