All the teams for Round 11 in the Smithy’s VFL.
Last year’s No.5 draft pick Elijah Tsatas will make his long-awaited debut for the Bombers in their Smithy’s VFL clash with a resurgent North Melbourne at NEC Hangar on Sunday.
Tsatas suffered a knee injury at training in January but has finally regained fitness to don the sash for the first time as the season reaches its mid-point.
Given all the other members of the top 11 – Aaron Cadman (1), Will Ashcroft (2), Harry Sheezel (3), George Wardlaw (4), Bailey Humphrey (6), Cam Mackenzie (7), Jhye Clark (8), Reuben Ginbey (9), Mattaes Phillipou (10) and Oliver Hollands (11) have made their AFL debuts already and in some cases dominated, the fact Tsatas was ranked comfortably in that top bracket should have Essendon fans salivating.
And he isn’t the only big name set to front up in the VFL, with mid-season draftee Jaiden Hunter to also debut, Jake Kelly returning from a month out with concussion and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti dropped from the AFL, while ruckmen Nick Bryan and Andrew Phillips and speedy youngsters Alwyn Davey and Anthony Munkara have also been selected.
Quinton Narkle has departed for Port Adelaide in the mid-season draft, while the quality of inclusions has cost three of last week’s best players their spots in Josh Hotchkin, Riley Loton and Callum McCarty.
The Kangaroos have rung the AFL changes, meaning Paul Curtis, Charlie Lazzaro, Blake Drury and possibly Dan Howe come into the VFL team, with Curtis Taylor, Darcy Tucker and Tarryn Thomas promoted.
Southport made just one change coming off the bye as it aims to get its season back on track as well as gaining a modicum of revenge on Casey Demons in the Grand Final rematch at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday, with Jake McQueen returning from suspension for Charlie Offermans.
The Demons have made six changes, losing star forward Jake Melksham to a one-week suspension for striking, Adam Tomlinson and Joel Smith to the AFL, with James Harmes and James Jordan returning and Warragul’s Rhys Galvin set to debut.
It will be a new-look Box Hill Hawks team as they prepare to meet Williamstown amazingly for the first time since 2019 in their top six showdown at Box Hill City Oval, with two young stars having headed west in the mid-season draft on Wednesday.
The Hawks regain VFL star Stu Horner from injury and talented AFL youngsters Josh Ward and Jack O’Sullivan, coming into to replace West Coast-bound No.1 pick Ryan Maric and Fremantle recruit Ethan Stanley, while Jack Scrimshaw and Bailey Macdonald will play for Hawthorn.
The Seagulls have again lost former Hawk James Cousins to his recurrent hamstring injury and key forward Mat Walker to soreness, with Max Philpot, Liam Conway and Toby Triffett being capable replacements.
Carlton’s AFL injury woes from last week have hit the VFL team hard as it attempts to beat Frankston for the first time in 21 years, with Zac Fisher, Alex Cincotta, Jack Silvagni, Lochie O’Brien and Lewis Young all promoted, with injuries also striking at the State league level as Ned Cahill succumbs to a calf and Alex Mirkov is also hurt.
But the Blues do have a strong AFL group coming in, headed by Ed Curnow and Jack Martin, plus David Cuningham, Lachie Fogarty and Lachie Cowan.
It was mixed news for the Dolphins as star defenders Joe Lloyd and Max Williams return from injury for their first games of the season alongside fellow gun backman Ryley Stoddart, a late withdrawal last week, Seb Quirk and Riley Stone.
But they have lost four more to injury, with impressive youngsters Darcy Gilbert (ankle) and Trent Marotta (thumb) out alongside ruckman Nic Minchin and backman Josh Smith.
The GWS and Richmond teams for their early Sunday morning clash at Giants Stadium have a real feel-good element to them with the Tigers recalling three players from long-term injuries and the Giants naming two debutants.
Tiger Tom Brown will play first game for the year after a serious wrist injury, Mykelti Lefau runs out for the first time since hurting his knee in Round 7 last year and Mutaz El Nour has missed six weeks with a knee injury, with mid-season draftee Matt Coulthard rushed into the team after kicking four goals in just his third SANFL game for Glenelg last week.
Queanbeyan’s Dayne Posthuma has broken in for his VFL debut for GWS, while Doncaster East’s Giorgio Varagiannis will also play his first game as a Giant after lining up once as a Covid top-up for Gold Coast in 2021 and taking part in a practice match for Carlton before this season.
GWS will be without promoted trio Callum Brown, Lachie Keeffe and Daniel Lloyd, plus luckless former captain Phil Davis, who is out for another month after reinjuring his calf.
There are also big names in everywhere at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, with Footscray naming Roarke Smith for his first game of the season after a foot injury alongside boom youngster Sam Darcy, Mitch Hannan, Lachie McNeil and Joel Garner after his two-match suspension.
The lot of a VFL-listed player at an AFL club has bitten Josh Chatfield, who has been forced out of the selected 23 despite kicking four goals in the loss to Gold Coast last week.
The Cats made seven unforced changes as Jack Bowes comes down for his VFL debut alongside Brandan Parfitt, Sam Simpson and ex-Bomber Brayden Ham, with young Geelong West ruckman Kye Annand, the brother of Werribee’s Kobe, to also play his first game.
Port Melbourne swapped one Manton brother for another with Archi Manton recalled at the expense of Oskar Manton as Anglesea’s Lachlan Smith makes his debut, with Jesse Cucinotta omitted and Tasmanian forward Jordan Lane to miss a couple of weeks with a groin injury.
The Borough take on the high-flying Suns, who have been boosted by key defender Mac Andrew being dropped from the AFL team for disciplinary reasons.
Northern Bullants are buzzing after having key forward Brandon Ryan drafted by Hawthorn on Wednesday night, with 197cm Fitzroy forward Harrison Grace being rewarded for strong VAFA form by being anointed as his replacement.
But the Bullants are down another key forward for the rest of the season, with Tyson Young heading to Europe for a holiday pre-booked before he arrived at Genis Steel Oval.
Tough Wodonga Raiders midfielder Hayden Clarke, 23, the brother of fellow Ant Dylan, has forced his way in for a debut against Collingwood on Sunday after winning 33 disposals against Ovens and Murray powerhouse Albury last week, while Ben Ham is expected to spend the rest of the year in red and white.
The Magpies lost Harvey Harrison to an AFL debut, Ed Allan to the emergency list and Campbell Lane to appendicitis, with young vice-captain Jedd Longmire heading the inclusions.
Werribee superstar Matt Hanson has succumbed to a shoulder injury again and will miss the Tigers’ trip to Coburg on Sunday, although fellow champion Michael Sodomaco is a more than suitable replacement, while it was mixed news for Annand family with Kobe going out due to concussion.
The Lions lose young forward Sam Mason to a groin injury as Alex Lukic returns to replace him, with Jhye Baddeley-Kelly also bolstering the forward line and Tom Jepson back for his second game of the year.
All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.
Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. This week’s game will be Northern Bullants vs Collingwood.
Casey Radio 97.7FM will be broadcasting the Carlton vs Frankston clash and 3WBC 94.1FM will take Box Hill Hawks vs Williamstown.
