RECENTLY retired Brownlow medallist Ben Cousins heads a cast of seven former players who have been nominated for the AFL Players' Association's Madden Medal.

The medal recognises the retiring player who has contributed the most to the game and the broader community, with former Sydney Swan skipper Brett Kirk and former Crows Simon Goodwin, Andrew McLeod and Brett Burton also nominated for the award.

Former Western Bulldog skipper Brad Johnson and Port Adelaide's premiership captain Warren Tredrea are also among the nominees.

"This year's nominated players reads like a Who's Who of football," AFLPA general manager of player relations, Ian Prendergast, said.

"Football will be poorer for their departure from the game but their legacies will endure for decades to come."

Named after the Madden brothers, Simon and Justin, the medal will be presented on Friday December 3 along with three other awards and will be voted by the current AFLPA board.

The medal was established in 2007 with Glenn Archer taking out the inaugural award, while Robert Harvey (2008) and Michael O'Loughlin (2009) have also received the honour.

The Community Spirit Award, Personal Development Award and Football Achievement Award will also be presented on the night with Kirk, Goodwin and Burton the only three nominated in all four categories.
