STAR Geelong midfielder Joel Selwood says he is looking forward to captaining the club in its opening NAB Cup matches.

The Cats' regular skipper Cameron Ling has been ruled out of the 40-minute meetings with the Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne due to a hamstring strain, which means Selwood will lead them into battle.

"I haven't thought about it too much, but it will be a new experience," Selwood said during the club's Telstra AFL community camp in the Victorian coastal town of Port Fairy.

"I think it's probably lucky that I get to do it in the NAB Cup rather than getting pushed straight in there in a home and away game.

"But I won't do anything much different in the next week or so. I've got to talk to the coach to make sure I actually get a game before I think to much about the captaincy."

The 22-year-old was recently named Geelong's vice-captain and says there is a great feeling around the club on the eve of the NAB Cup.

"I think the boys are ready to play," Selwood said. "We've been training for a long time now and we've been learning a new game plan so we're really looking forward to putting that into place."

Geelong is a new-look outfit this season, with two-time premiership coach Mark Thompson now working under James Hird at Essendon and former Cats star Gary Ablett preparing for his first season with the Gold Coast Suns.

"Obviously, if you take two key people out of an organisation, it's going to be different," Selwood said. "But it's been good, it's been fresh around the place and the boys have really jumped on board the program that we've put in place.

"We look forward to moving on as a footy club. Anywhere in work or in business you've got to move on pretty quick and we've learned that.

"I think it was important that [football manager] Neil Balme and [chief executive] Brian Cook made it a quick transition."

While many pundits are tipping the Chris Scott-coached Cats to slip down the ladder in 2011, Selwood is adamant the club's premiership window is still open.

"We believe in ourselves and what we can put in place," he said. "In saying that, we've got to prove it too. We look forward to doing that.

"We'll start with the Bulldogs and Kangaroos in the NAB Cup, but we're more looking forward to playing St Kilda in round one."
