BRISBANE Lions captain Jonathan Brown says he'll be taking no special measures to protect Brendan Fevola from his former teammates when the Lions take on Carlton at the Gabba on Thursday night.

Fevola is being shielded from the media this week but Brown says he won't need any such protection on the field.

"The 18 cameras placed around the field will look after that," he said.

"The umpires are conscious that when the ball is down the other end of the field a hundred metres away there's no need for contact."

Brown said slippery conditions made the football like a cake of soap against the Eagles last Saturday night, which may help to explain Fevola's return of 3.7.

The skipper said Fevola was excited to be fronting up against his old club for the first time in the regular season.

"He wants to play well against his old side and we want to help him play well, that's for sure," Brown said.

"But I think most of all he just wants to get a win like the rest of us."

Brown said Fevola had slotted easily into the Lions forward structure, which included a host of other new faces including Brent Staker, Todd Banfield and the now-injured Amon Buchanan.

Brown compared Fevola to his former forward line partners at the Lions, Daniel Bradshaw and Alastair Lynch.

"Him and Braddy are very similar,  and Lynchy for that matter," Brown said.

"That has made it a hell of a lot easier; I've had great relationships with those forwards and it makes it a lot easier. Fev is a very similar style of player."

Brown leads the competition in goals (five) and marks (14) after round one, while Justin Sherman is first for inside-50s (10).

But the skipper said the Lions may need an extra yard of pace to keep up with the fleet-footed Carlton midfielders and small forwards including Eddie Betts and Chris Yarran.

"They're a very athletic side," Brown said.

"Their defenders are maybe a little bit undersized but they make up for it with their athleticism; obviously their midfield runs very well and their forwards are very quick.

"They've had a couple of days extra break but we're playing on our home deck so it will be a good match up."

Brown threw his support behind gun midfielder Jared Brennan, who is rumoured to be a prime target of the Gold Coast Football Club, which enters the competition in 2011.

He said the players were used to media speculating about their future.

"It's an uncomfortable situation. I've been through it, where there is constant speculation about your future.

"Fortunately enough there's a rule in place that you can only lose one player from each club, so hopefully we lose none.

"But we know there's going to be a fair bit swirling around all year considering the Gold Coast are only 45 minutes drive down the highway."
