CARLTON coach Brett Ratten has forecast up to four changes to the Blues side to face Fremantle on Saturday night.

Ratten lamented a poor mental approach that cost his team dearly in the loss to North Melbourne and with the club's injury list shrinking further during the week the pressure for senior spots is on.

A host of players including Paul Bower, Brock McLean, Shaun Hampson, Robbie Warnock, Kane Lucas, Chris Yarran, Shaun Grigg and Lachie Henderson all played well in the VFL last weekend and Ratten said he wouldn't be afraid to shake up his side for the important clash.

"It will be a good debate at match committee," Ratten said at Visy Park on Wednesday. "There are some players whose form has been up and down and some players have had poor quarters for a couple of weeks now so their spot will be under the microscope.

"Bower will come back into the team so that might allow Bryce Gibbs to go back into the middle and that might push someone like Marc Murphy forward, then the rotations in our midfield really get strong."

Ratten said the poor discipline and lack of mental application against the Kangaroos had been talked about during the review of the game and he was confident of a much better showing this week.

"Most of the issues that we've brought up in the season where we felt we've fallen away in a game, whether it's a style of play or a tactic, if we've identified it the team has been extremely good at changing it the following week so we expect a real response [against Fremantle]," he said.

The loss to North means the Blues are still yet to string three wins together this season and Ratten said it was an issue that had come in for some attention behind closed doors.

"It's something that we've had a look at. I think it's more our approach in games mentally rather than physically," he said.

"It would be nice if we could get those three wins and see if we could get into a real groove of winning and creating confidence.

"I just think sometimes when you have the two wins and a loss it starts to put a little bit of doubt back in your mind and you lose a bit of confidence."

Ratten has demanded a strong start from his players against Fremantle which he felt would go a long way towards the team securing an important a win before the mid-season break.

"A win going into the break allows players to really enjoy [it] and mentally freshen up knowing that they go into the following week with a bit of confidence," he said.

"If you go away with a loss I think you think about the games coming up and you worry about it a little bit more so from a rest point-of-view you don't really take that break.

"It will be really important for our group to mentally get away from footy and having a win will allow you to do that. Having a loss might not allow you to."
