AUSTRALIAN IDOL singing stars Shannon Noll and Guy Sebastian showed some surprisingly good form in the pre-game celebrity match. The Swans were also on song on Sunday afternoon as they steamrolled a young Carlton side at the SCG by 62 points.
With percentage so important in the countdown to the finals, a win of this size was vital, as the Swans have gained some real momentum with this win on a sunny, cool day in front of almost 25,000 fans.
The Swans kicked their highest score of the season to win 25.12 (162) to Carlton's 15.10 (100), handing the Blues their 11th loss.
It was Sydney's highest-ever score against Carlton, beating the previous total of 23.13 (151) in 1934.
The Blues may be planning for next season, but now the Swans can start thinking about September after the quality of their performance today.
The final quarter, in particular, was like a boxer being pummelled punch drunk as the Blues were simply no match for a Swans side that has confidence running through its veins again. The home side kicked 12 of the final 14 goals of the game, including two late to Barry Hall to give him four for the match.
However, the first quarter was a shock for the home fans. The Swans' momentum from last week was halted in the first quarter as Carlton came out firing on all cylinders, taking a 26-point lead mid-way through the term.
The returning Brendon Fevola provided an dangerous outlet in the forward line but it wasn't to last. Last year's Coleman Medallist finished with 2.4 and his team couldn't keep up the pace.
Hall snapped Sydney's first goal of the day in the 19th minute and further goals from Michael O'Loughlin and athletic ruckman Peter Everitt brought the Swans within six points.
Forward pocket Eddie Betts took a juggling mark and goaled after the siren to hand Carlton a 12-point lead at quarter-time.
A three-goal second quarter from Nick Davis sparked Sydney from their lacklustre opening as the Swans unleashed their running game, kicking eight goals to Carlton's two to take a 27-point lead - 11.7 (73) to 7.4 (46) - into the main break.
A courageous mark running with the flight of the ball at half-forward by co-captain Brett Kirk, who ran on to kick a goal from 30m out also inspired the Swans, who hit the front for the first time in the match when Davis kicked his first goal at the six-minute mark of the second quarter.
Darren Jolly and Everitt led the Swans to a 31-7 advantage in the ruck duels in the first half with Jude Bolton responsible for seven centre clearances and creative half-back Nick Malceski had 15 first-half possessions.
In a free-scoring third quarter, the Blues kicked four of the first six goals including two from forward pocket Matthew Lappin.
Sydney steadied after some promising signs from the Blues to extend their lead by three points to hold a 17.9 (111) to 12.9 (81) break at three-quarter time after kicking six goals to Carlton's five.
The Swans delighted the crowd with another eight goals to Carlton's three in the last quarter.
Everitt showed all his experience, garnering four goals and dominating the hit-outs,
Malceski continued his stellar season with 28 touches and two majors off half-back and Adam Schneider had 24 disposals and three goals.
Consistency has been a big problem for the Swans this year. Two good wins in a row has come at just the right time. The question being asked all week was 'Could Sydney back-up from last week's dazzler against Fremantle?'. The Swans answered that in emphatic fashion.
The team plays West Coast, who have lost four of their past five, next weekend, sitting in the top eight and right on song.
