ST KILDA forward Justin Koschitzke could make his season debut against Richmond this Friday night, as the team attempts to boost its fire-power in the wake of last week's low-scoring affair.

Koschitzke missed the round one loss to Geelong and the entire NAB Cup and NAB Challenge series after undergoing surgery on his troublesome ankle.

Koschitzke terrorised Richmond's defence in round 21 last year, slotting five goals in St Kilda's 21-point win.

Saints assistant coach Peter Berbakov said Koschitzke would be considered at the selection table.

"He's been in training for over a week and a half now so another full training session today and I'm sure we'd love to throw him straight back in," Berbakov said on Wednesday.

"But it's the balance between the number of full training sessions coming back from some surgery as to whether we throw him back in this week or the next week."

First-round draft pick Jamie Cripps is another player Berbakov said the Saints would consider. Cripps was an emergency last week after impressing on the track and in practice matches over the pre-season.

"He (Cripps) has played the last two games at Sandringham. He's certainly got a lot of talent for a young kid so he's not far off. Like most young kids coming in they just need to build that fitness base and get some regular games," Berbakov said.

"He's a chance, he's certainly got an opportunity. I don't think after round one we're going to be making wholesale changes. We're not hitting the panic button yet after losing by one point to a very strong team. He's going to add to our depth and we certainly think we're going to see him during the year."

The Saints are sure to be planning heavily for Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt who booted six goals in last week's loss to Carlton.

Berbakov said the Saints were considering several defensive options for the 2010 Coleman medallist.

"We've got some good tall backs who can all go to him. James Gwilt, Jason Blake, (Sam) Fisher and even Zac (Dawson) who didn't play on him last year. We might need to play all four on him," he said.

"We're not going to fall for the old 'it's all about Jack'. We still need to defend their other small forwards."

One option Berbakov didn't float was Sam Gilbert who spent most of last week in defence after some talk he would play as a forward this year.

Berbakov said there was a strong chance he would appear in attack this week.

"We had him forward in most of the pre-season games and we just felt that one of our strengths has been our defence so we thought we'd shore him up back down there. He's going to be flexible, he's a great player who can also play midfield so there's all those options for him to play all over the ground."

Justin Koschitzke is a $237,400 forward in the Toyota AFL Dream Team competition.
