GEELONG midfielder Jimmy Bartel has been subbed off at quarter time after suffering concussion in the Cats' clash with St Kilda.

The incident occurred midway during the first quarter, with Bartel crunched by teammate James Podsiadly in a marking contest on the wing.

Bartel was assisted by trainers off the ground and immediately headed down to the rooms before being ruled out at the quarter-time break.

He was replaced by substitute Mitch Duncan as the Saints held a slender three-point lead at the first change.

The Cats hit back in the second term booting several unanswered goals to take a commanding lead into the long break.

Later in third term, former Cat Ryan Gamble lit up the Melbourne skies with a towering mark.

With Nick Riewoldt and Tom Lonergan locking horns, Gamble climbed on his former teammate Darren Milburn's shoulders to take a sensational grab deep in the Saints forward-line.

Gamble kicked truly to reduce the margin to just two goals, after the Cats had a 23-point lead at the main break.
