The Swans Reserves have drawn with AFL Canberra undefeated ladder-leaders Eastlake after a controversial 50 metre penalty resulted in an Eastlake goal a minute before the final siren.

The Swans were four goals up by the 18 minute mark of the first quarter after Jake Orreal opened the scoring with a mark and goal from 15 metres just two minutes into the game. Brett Meredith kicked the Swans’ second on the run from 30 metres and Matthew Laidlaw, who followed his player down from the backline, kicked their third from 30 metres on the run. Kristin Thornton kicked his first from 45 metres out before Eastlake scored their first major. Nick Smith marked and goaled to give the Swans their fifth, and a 15-point lead at the first break.

By half-time Eastlake had cut the margin to just five points, kicking five goals to the Swans’ three. Ed Barlow kicked one on the run, Mike Pyke goaled after a free kick 30 metres out and Ryan Brabazon made it eight for the Swans goaling from a Pyke pass.

Eastlake opened the third term with a goal that put them two points up before Barlow kicked his second on the run 16 minutes into the quarter. Eastlake kicked another two before Laidlaw scored the Swans’ tenth goal. The Swans trailed by 13 points at three quarter time.

Matthew O’Dwyer scored two goals six minutes into the last quarter, but Eastlake were able to take back the lead with goal number 14. Three goals from the Swans and two from Eastlake resulted in a one-point lead for Eastlake towards the end of the final quarter, but the Swans regained the lead at the 20 minute mark with a quick snap by Thornton.

A minute before the siren, Eastlake were awarded a free kick followed by a 50 metre penalty, paid when a Swans player attempted to stop Eastlake from playing on. The two sides drew at 16.10 (106) apiece when the siren blew seconds after the centre bounce.

Smith was the Swans’ best; Thornton, ruckman Pyke and Brabazon were also good. Daniel Currie, who rotated between centre half forward and the ruck, and Barlow, who spent time on the wing and at centre half back, were also in the best.

The Swans Reserves will now meet Tuggeranong on Sunday 31 May at 2pm at Greenway Oval in Canberra.
