FACING off against former coach Mick Malthouse and Carlton will be a "different" experience, Collingwood deputy-vice captain Dayne Beams says.

Colllingwood does battle with the Brisbane Lions in a virtual semi-final NAB Cup clash at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, with the winner booking their place in the pre-season Grand Final.

Malthouse's new club are also in position to win through to the decider, provided they defeat Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Friday night.

If results fall that way, the arch-rivals would set up a mouthwatering clash in the NAB Cup Grand Final.

Beams, who was added to Collingwood's four-man leadership group at the start of the year after a breakout 2012 season, said he would relish the chance to come up against Malthouse.

Beams and Malthouse reportedly had a close relationship during his time with the Magpies, and the veteran coach has been open in his praise of the young star.

In particular, when Beams selflessly put the team first and withdrew from the Magpies' 2011 Grand Final side.

"It would be different playing against Mick," Beams said.

"He's obviously the first coach I had here and he's a very good coach so the Blues are going to be well tuned and ready to go for the real season."

The Magpies will be without stars Dane Swan, Scott Pendlebury and Travis Cloke for the clash against the Lions on Saturday night, but Beams said the onus is on the inexperienced squad to stand up in their absence.

Last year's Copeland Trophy winner, who missed last week's 20-point win against West Coast, has been named to return against the Lions.

"We've sat down and we've said we want to win every game we play in," Beams said.

"We're definitely going out there to win and we're definitely going out there to play the way we want to play."

Dane Swan has been a major talking point at Collingwood after his much-publicised interview aired on The Footy Show on Thursday night.

The Brownlow medallist has reportedly been fined $5000 for breaking club protocol by not alerting club officials about the nature of the interview.

Beams said he did not watch the interview and said the matter had been dealt with internally.

"It's something that's been dealt with inside the club and for us as players, all we can worry about is what we do on game day and that's Saturday night against Brisbane," Beams said.

"Whatever happens within the club and the decisions they make has got nothing to do with the playing group. They've made that call and that's the way it is."

The 23-year-old raised more than $10,000 for the World's Greatest Shave charity and the Leukaemia Foundation by having his head shaved at the Westpac Centre on Friday.
