WEST Coast Eagles coach John Worsfold has conceded his team is in rebuilding mode after its horror 100-point loss to Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday afternoon, a result that leaves the club with just two wins after 10 rounds.
West Coast had trailed by just five goals at the long break, but then the Pies kicked 15 goals to three to set a new record margin between the clubs.
Worsfold said after the match that the match committee had some tough decisions to make regarding the direction for the rest of the season.
"Well, one option is to stick with the kids and let them keep learning, that's certainly an option," he said. "The other option is see who's available and deserves the opportunity to play next week through WAFL form.
"We're building towards finding out about players, and who's going to take up to where we want to get to."
Part of that long-term plan is premiership midfielder Sam Butler, who hasn't played at the top level since that joyous day in September a couple of years ago.
The 22-year-old has strung together five matches in the WAFL, his best effort since the flag win, but Worsfold said there was no rush to get him back into the West Coast side.
"When he's ready, when he's ready. Whether that's next week – it may be, for some limited ground time – the real focus is to get some football into Sam at AFL level this year to really set him up so he can continue his career long-term.
"So this year, in terms of what he offers our team, we've got no great expectations, it's about building him up, getting him ready to go.
"Same as getting games into Chris Masten, Brad Ebert and Tim Houlihan – Sam will be treated in a similar vein."
