Normally when a favourite son returns to face his old club a raft of stories abound recalling the glory days.

But Cats coach Chris Scott has faced a low key build up in his return to the Gabba to face long time team mate and Lions coach Michael Voss.

Scott and Voss played 180 games together, including three grand finals that resulted in premierships in 2001 and 2002.

Scott debuted in the opening round of 1994 and signed off after the last game of the 2007 season, against the Cats. He played 215 games and kicked 79 goals, and his Lions came out victorious in 126 of the matches he played.

He won a best & fairest and was the AFL’s rising star in his maiden season.

Adding to the occasion is the fact that Cats’ assistant coach Nigel Lappin is one of the Lions most decorated champions, playing in a hat-trick of premierships over his 279 game career. Lappin was a four-time All Australian, club captain and best & fairest winner with Brisbane.

Fellow assistant Blake Caracella spent two seasons with Brisbane, resulting in a pair of grand finals and the 2003 premiership. Caracella kicked 33 goals in 34 games with the Lions.

Troy Selwood joined the Cats football department this year after playing 75 games with the Lions. He was a rising star nominee in 2005.

One reason may be that the Cats are second on the ladder at 13-2 while Brisbane languish at 3-12 in 15th place. Or maybe fact many former Lions making their way in the coaching world has seen the novelty wear off.

Nonetheless, the game should not pass without Scott, Lappin, Caracella and Selwood’s contribution to the Lions being recognised.
