GOLD Coast superstar Gary Ablett says he has been excited for weeks at the thought of taking on his former Geelong teammates.

Ablett gets his chance on Saturday night when the Suns play their first game at Metricon Stadium against the undefeated Cats and the Brownlow medallist could hardly contain his excitement on Monday.

Ablett played 192 matches at Geelong but left at the end of last season after signing a five-year deal with the AFL's 17th franchise.

He didn't quite say 'bring it on', but rather than being nervous about facing the competition front-runners and a group of players he knows better than anyone, Ablett said he was itching to play.

"I'm looking forward to getting out against some of my ex-teammates and doing my best and challenging myself against some of them," he said.

"They've got some great players down there and it's going to be a challenge and I'm looking forward to that.

"I've played football with those guys for nine years and it'll be good to be out and up against them and test myself out."

Ablett said no text messaging had started yet between himself and the Cats, although he did expect to cop some sledging on the field.

"I know there's a few boys that will, but I'm not going to say," he laughed.

"I got the chance to catch up with them last week (while the Suns players were given four days off during their bye week) so we had a bit of a chat about it then. I think they're going to come up a day early and I'll probably catch up with a few of them."

Geelong kept their perfect season under new coach Chris Scott intact last week with a two-point win over Carlton and Ablett was all praise for their efforts.

He said it was a great club with great leaders and it would be "amazing" to give the Cats their first loss.

Fresh from an incredible 41 disposal, four-goal performance against Adelaide in his last start, Ablett is in red-hot form, but said he did not expect to be tagged on Saturday night.

"I don't know who will (match up). I don't think they'll play a tag, they're not really a side that normally does that. Cameron Ling has over the years but I think they'll play more an offensive role on me and get someone running the other way," he said.

"I'm sure they'll play a few tricks throughout the day but we'll be ready for that and we'll be playing a few of our own."
