THE MCC says its back-up plan worked when two light towers went out during Saturday's twilight match between Richmond and Greater Western Sydney.

Investigations into exactly what caused the fault are continuing, but it's believed to relate to a power issue in the local area.

The outage threatened to interrupt the match as light began to fade, but the issue was rectified in time.

"On Saturday at about 5.30pm, a power interruption affected light tower No.3 and No. 5 on the southern side of the stadium," MCC spokesman Shane Brown told AFL.com.au.

"The interruption itself lasted 1-2 minutes. It took another 10-15 minutes for both towers to resume full operation, as they must cool down before they can restrike," he said.

"Pleasingly, the system we have in place in the event of such an occurrence worked as it should have and the game was not disrupted.

"Our investigations confirm that our own equipment did not fail.  We are quite confident that the issue that caused the power interruption was external to the stadium.

"However, we are still awaiting for confirmation from CitiPower as to what caused the outage."

Melburnians will have spotted the light towers illuminated on Monday morning, but the MCC said it was part of routine testing and maintenance, and was unrelated to Saturday's outage.
