Following the Club’s first training session in Queenstown on Sunday, the squad yesterday split into groups and took part in activities including the famous ‘Canyon Swing’, which is 109m high, has a 60m free fall and a 200m swing. All players stepped up to the challenge, with many facing their fear of heights.

Saints midfielder Andrew McQualter said, “It’s was no doubt nerve racking standing at the edge of the platform. I have bungee jumped before but that didn’t seem to take the nerves away.”

“I knew once I was up there, it just had to be mind over matter. The adrenalin was rushing and I know a few of the other boys that had a fear of height were worse than me!” McQualter said.

Once the players built up their courage and completed the ‘Canyon Swing’, it was the Assistant Coaches’ turn, with Robert Harvey admitting to pre-jump nerves.

“It was a decent height, with a 60m free fall. I’m not a particular fan of heights, but I was glad I got through it ok.”

“After hearing that all the players had done it, there wasn’t really much of a choice - I had to jump!” Harvey said.

After a solid day of training yesterday the Saints this morning held an indoor session at Queenstown Events Centre. The boys were split into groups where they each focused on core strengthening and upper body weight work, along with an off legs training routine with emphasis on boxing and bike work.

With half the team still to partake in the Canyon Swing on Tuesday, it’ll be interesting to see if there’s anyone who doesn’t go through with the jump.
