Collingwood ruckman Cameron Wood was happy with how he combined with teammate Darren Jolly to quell the influence of Fremantle’s Aaron Sandilands in the Magpies’ 36-point win on Friday night.
While the Docker giant controlled the majority of the hitouts (43) compared to Wood (11) and Jolly (19), the Magpie midfield won the battle for the clearances (46 - 34).
“Obviously Sandilands is a big dominant ruckman so we had a few things in place to counter his influence which I thought worked pretty well”, Wood told CTV in the rooms after the win.
“Myself and Darren had a chat earlier in the week and we came up with a few things. He (Sandilands) still won the majority of the hitouts but I felt we did a few things to counter that.”
It was Wood’s second senior game of the season after overcoming a finger injury which saw him miss the opening month of the season. The 23-year-old was pleased with his output in front of goal (two) but conceded he needs to find more of the footy around the ground.
“I am probably not getting as much of the ball as I would like. But to go forward and kick a couple of goals is always good. If I can keep doing that hopefully I can stay in the team.”
