With the Swans going into the match as heavy favourites- Melbourne has won just one from twelve games this season- Roos cautioned his players against getting ahead of themselves.
“For the players this week, we’ve got to make sure we prepare as diligently as we always do and we will do that,” Roos said at a media conference on Monday.
“We spoke about that after the game, it's a huge game for us, if we can win this week it sets us up, but we need to do everything well and right to win.
“Melbourne have played some good footy at stages and have some really good young kids coming in.
“If they get off to a good start they get excited, so you’ve got to take that opportunity away and that’s the real key to this week."
The Swans have won five straight games and have an opportunity to make it six ahead of their second bye of the season.
“It's really hard to keep winning games week in and week out, so if all of a sudden you have a break - sometimes people say if you have a break it breaks the momentum, maybe after two or there wins it probably does a bit, but if you're looking at five, six, hopefully we can win this week, so it (the break) probably comes at a good time.
“We've got some younger guys that are in the middle of their first year and it's a long year. Some of the senior guys need a break as well, so regardless of the result this weekend we're looking forward to having a week off.”
Meanwhile, a number of players including Nic Fosdike, Nick Davis, Luke Brennan, Heath Grundy, Ben Mathews and Tim Schmidt, are pushing for senior selection and Roos believes the depth is as good as it’s been during his time at the Club.
“It's unusual to have so many good players’ playing seconds,” the coach added.
“Certainly in my time at the Club we have built from 2003 and tried to develop our list and done a pretty reasonable job.
“It's the first time we've had a lot of senior players playing seconds' footy and we've got Jesse White and Nick Smith who have played seniors this year, so we've got a fair bit of depth but by the same token, we'd prefer those guys to work their way back into the team in form rather than wait for injuries and that's what they are trying to do.”
“So it’s bad for them I suppose but good that we've got some young kids playing well and we're in pretty good form.
“Fossy just started playing again and Crouchy is coming back probably this week, provided he gets through this week,” said Roos.
"Thankfully he's been able to string some weeks together and he's pretty fit and we'll ease him into the games, he won't play much this week, probably build up over the next month.”
