Watch Tarkyn Lockyer discuss his new role on his first day as head coach of the VFL Magpies

Collingwood’s new VFL coach Tarkyn Lockyer understands he has some big shoes to fill as he heads into his first season at the helm of the club’s development department.

The 30-year-old, who retired at the end of this year after playing 227 games for the Magpies, replaces 1990 premiership hero Gavin Brown, who accepted an assistant coaching position with Carlton earlier in the month.

“Obviously to take over from Gavin Brown is a privilege and something I want to succeed in,” Lockyer told CTV on his first day in the office.

“Mick rang me and told me the club was interested.  I was flattered that the footy club saw me in this sort of light.”??

Lockyer managed 11 senior games in his final year and conceded the ability to switch mentality from player to coach will be difficult but something he can overcome.

“Now that I have moved on from playing I am pretty comfortable to accept the coaching role and very excited and nervous about what awaits me.

“I am not going to miss the preseason and the running however once the boys start playing I am sure I will miss being out there.??

“That part of my life I am moving on and I am certainly looking forward to sitting on the other side of the fence and learning what it’s all about to be a coach.

Lockyer spent most of his final year in a modified playing/coaching role that saw him look after the forward group in the VFL.

“It was great to have a taste of coaching in the VFL this year and I found a passion in this area.

“I will be looking to improve on where the guys were last year.  Naturally the younger guys will be a year older and a bit more experienced.”??

Lockyer has already highlighted two Magpies who he thinks will make a big impact in season 2011.

“A couple of the young kids in Josh Thomas and Ben Sinclair.  I am sure they will play senior footy next year.”
