DUAL West Coast premiership player Glen Jakovich has been appointed as an All-Australian selector, replacing the late Chris Mainwaring.
Jakovich, who played a club-record 276 games at centre half-back for West Coast between 1991 and 2004 and won its best and fairest award in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 2000, joins Andrew Demetriou (chairman), Adrian Anderson, Rod Austin, Kevin Bartlett, Mark Bickley, Gerard Healy and Robert Walls on the All Australian selection panel. The All Australian selectors, along with Kevin Sheehan, also choose the winner of the NAB AFL Rising Star Award.
Anderson said he was delighted Jakovich had accepted the invitation to join the committee, after a stellar career on the field in which he also won All-Australian selection himself twice in 1994-95.
"Glen was an imposing player in his time as the centre-piece of a brilliant Eagles defensive line of John Worsforld, Jakovich and Guy McKenna and his long-time duels with Wayne Carey were a highlight of the game in the 1990s," Mr Anderson said.
"His playing record stands up to any scrutiny and he was a key member of the club's first two premierships as they established themselves as a force in the competition.
"We are delighted to have him as an All-Australian selector, as it was vital for the balance of the panel to have another selector based outside of Victoria to view as many matches live in other states as is possible," Mr Anderson said.
Jakovich said he was surprised and honoured with the approach to join the All-Australian selection committee, and had not hesitated in accepting.
"It's a great privilege to be able to be involved in the discussion on the best players in our competition each year, and to continue to have a small role to play in our game," Jakovich said.
"I've loved every minute of my time in football and I'm looking forward immensely to this season and the great games I'm expecting to see."
