Sydney Swans key defender Heath Grundy says he is expecting the unexpected as the Swans prepare to take on a Brisbane Lions forward line without its biggest stars.

With focal points Jonathan Brown and Brendan Fevola both ruled out through injury, Grundy will be mindful that an unpredictable Lions forward line does not get under the Swans' guard.

“I suppose with Brown up forward you know that the ball is going to go to him, so with him ruled out, they’re going to be more unpredictable and we need to be switched on so someone else doesn’t pop up and kick three or four goals,” Grundy said.

In the absence of Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Grundy has relished the role of taking on some of the game’s brightest stars including Lance Franklin, Matthew Pavlich and most recently, Barry Hall.

“I’ve got to play a bit deeper on that last line of defence, as opposed to my normal role across half back. It has been really enjoyable and I’m learning a lot from the big forwards,” Grundy said.

“With a few of our younger guys playing down back, I’ve had to be more of a leader in defence. Lewy’s a very experienced player and so I’ve had to step up a little bit, be more vocal and help those guys out."

If the Swans can get over the line against Brisbane, they will be guaranteed a home elimination final next week at ANZ Stadium.
