KEEPING up with Ben Cousins is the challenge facing the AFL’s premier midfielders as round one of the AFL season looms.

Cousins has impressed in his two pre-season games, particularly against the Lions last Friday night when he tackled with venom and managed 25 possessions across all parts of the ground.

Lions midfielder Scott Harding played on Cousins in patches and says he learned a lot from the experience.

“I got a good look at him,” Harding said.

“He’s everywhere. He’s good at gut-busting running, which doesn’t really suit me. I’m more of a burst player, so it was pretty hard work but it was good.”

The Lions were unable to get the ball forward with enough penetration against Richmond, paying for costly turnovers.

Coach Michael Voss called for his players to work harder and there was no better example than Cousins.

“He runs very hard and that’s how you find the footy, so that’s one of the tips I picked up,” Harding said.

“He had a great game, he’s obviously a sensational player but he’s come back to form pretty well.”
