Chris Dawes was “terrified” with kicking his first goal in Collingwood’s 14-point victory over St Kilda at the MCG on Saturday night.
Speaking to CTV in the rooms after the match, Dawes believes the win was crucial to putting the team’s season back on track.
“I think with what’s happened off the field it (was) really important but also given that we have lost three in a row we really needed to steady the ship and to do it in the fashion that we did tonight against a good team like St Kilda was really pleasing”, Dawes said.
“At halftime I think we needed to keep doing what we were doing and there were a couple of tactical things we just needed to be as sharp as we could be and keep our concentration on our game plan.
“They (St Kilda) are a very good side and we expected them to come out as hard as they did we knew that we had to just be really dedicated to our task and try to combat them as best we could”.
Dawes finished the game with two goals, seven kicks, six marks and created contests in the Magpie forward 50 all night. He slotted home his first career major when he calmly picked up the ball from Dane Swan’s slippery pass in the goal square.
“I was absolutely terrified. It happened that the ball skidded through and landed in my hands. I ran a little bit and tried to kick it as hard as I could and luckily I was facing the right way.
“I thought early on the ball found me a bit I didn’t have a huge impact but I tried to play my part as best I could”.
