THE 10 AFL Women’s clubs have to sign two "cross-code rookies", players who must not have played organised football for three years prior to May 1 this year.

The players are from a variety of sports, including basketball, netball, Gaelic football and rugby sevens.

Meet the newest AFLW players:

ADELAIDE

Ailish Considine: One of the international graduates from the Crosscoders program set up by the Western Bulldogs, the Irishwoman plays Gaelic football and camogie (female hurling) in Clare. Has played some Australian football in Ireland; can kick both sides of her body.

Maisie Nankivell: An 18-year-old netballer who has captained South Australia's under-17 and under-19 teams. Will combine footy with her netball duties with the Adelaide Thunderbirds, where she is a train-on player. Played football as a junior.

BRISBANE LIONS

Brianna McFarlane: Was a stand-out for NSW/ACT and the Eastern Allies during the under-18 championships, but living on the border of Queensland, has decided to play for the Lions. A former soccer player, the tall winger only started playing footy this year.

Krystal Scott: The Lions have retained Scott, a former tennis player, as a rookie for 2019. Didn't manage to break into a strong Brisbane AFLW side in 2018, the running forward kicked seven goals in eight games for Bond University in the QWAFL this year.

CARLTON

Chloe Dalton: A rugby sevens player who was part of Australia's gold-medal winning squad at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Played VFLW with the Blues this year and was deputy vice-captain. A hard-running midfielder with a good sidestep and strong tackling skills.

Brooke Walker: Also an Australian rugby sevens representative. Played every game for Carlton's VFLW side this season, mainly off half-back. Another strong tackler with excellent endurance.

COLLINGWOOD

Sharni Layton: One of the most successful Australian netballers of the past decade and captain of Australia. Played football as a junior and spent her netball career in goal defence and goal keeper. At 188cm, could potentially play ruck.

Sarah Rowe: An Irish Gaelic footballer, Rowe has also represented her country in soccer. Plays as a forward for County Mayo. Kicks the ball well.

FREMANTLE

Brianna Moyle: Played basketball for the Perth Lynx in the WNBL. Identified through the club's rookie talent search, her aggression is a big strength.

Angelique Stannett: Former Perth Glory defender in the W-League (soccer). Has captained Western Australia. Also signed through the club's rookie talent search. 

GEELONG

Maddy McMahon: Former basketballer who played in the WNBL with the Australian Institute of Sport team. Played VFLW with Geelong this year in a variety of positions, including ruck in the Grand Final side in the absence of an injured Erin Hoare. Said she would have tried football earlier, but was pregnant with her third child. 

Georgie Rankin: Another basketballer who was based in Queensland, playing for the state as a junior. Played football for the first time this year for Surfers Paradise and was the side's leading goalkicker. Great-granddaughter of Teddy Rankin, who was recently named a club legend. 

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY

Yvonne Bonner: An Irish Gaelic footballer who has been signed from the CrossCoders international program. Plays full-forward for Donegal, but is expected to line up at centre-half forward for the Giants, forming a one-two Irish punch with Cora Staunton.

Taylah Davies: A midcourter for the Giants netball side in the national league, Davies can play as either an inside or outside midfielder. Quick and athletic.

MELBOURNE

Chantel Emonson: Played cricket for Victoria as a junior. Reignited her football with Casey in the VFLW this year after playing as a junior. A winger with clean disposal and a strong kick.

Shae Sloane: Sister of Adelaide's AFL vice-captain Rory, Sloane played footy as a junior. Captained Australia in volleyball before making the switch to footy this year, playing at Melbourne's VFLW affiliate Casey.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Tayla Roberts: A basketballer with Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL, the 191cm Roberts is expected to play ruck. Hails from Launceston and is part of North Melbourne's Tasmanian alliance.

Jessie Williams: A soccer player who also comes from Tasmania. Has been based in Canberra most recently, and played football this year for Eastlake Demons in the AFL Canberra competition. Plays on the wing and half-forward flank.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Tessa Boyd: Sister of the AFL Bulldogs' Tom, Boyd is a basketballer who played for Nunawading Spectres in the SEABL. Competitive and a natural kick, the Dogs see Boyd playing in a variety of positions. 

Celine Moody: The ruck/key forward is the identical twin of Carlton's Breann, and played for the Blues in this year's VFLW season. Standing at 188cm, Moody took up football again this year after a four-year break when she was in the army.
