PORT Adelaide forward Jay Schulz has been included in the club's leadership group for next season, while this year's vice-captain Jacob Surjan has been left out.

Schulz was a revelation in attack for the Power last season kicking 33 goals in 16 games to top the club's goalkicking.

Schulz, in just his second season since switching from Richmond, was voted into Port Adelaide's seven-man leadership group along with Dom Cassisi, Dean Brogan, Troy Chaplin and first-time entrants Travis Boak, Alipate Carlile and Jackson Trengove.

Coach Matthew Primus said the club would wait until after the NAB Cup to name its captain and vice-captains.

"Jay had a pretty good year and certainly filled in Warren Tredrea's shoes when he went down," Primus said on Tuesday. "His last half of the season leadership-wise was pretty good in terms of what he was able to do off the field and that got recognised by his fellow players.

"We've got Travis Boak and Jackson Trengove in there too, so we've got some young names there and the future of our club.

"It's good for those players to get the recognition, but now they have to stand up to the levels they have decided to set."

Cassisi, Brogan and Surjan formed a more traditional-style leadership group at Alberton last season, which was implemented by leadership coaches Jan Stirling and Jenny Williams.

Primus said it was his decision to revert back to a bigger group, which is more commonplace in the AFL these days.

"It [the leadership group] is something I believe in," Primus said. "You've always got power in numbers and with the way the votes fell you couldn't just knock it off at three.

"Those guys were all pretty close together and that's why we've gone down that path.

"We'll re-visit it again before the season starts and from there we'll choose our captains or vice-captains, but that will probably be [a] similar [structure] to what we've had in previous years."

Surjan missed half of last season with a knee injury and won't join his teammates for training until the middle of January.

Primus said Surjan was one of a handful of players on the cusp of being voted into the leadership group.

"About 10 players received a lot of votes, but we had to make a cut off somewhere and Jacob didn't quite make it," he said.

"Not playing in the games probably has something to do with it and Jacob hasn't been able to train because of the knee operation he had last season and that's probably hindered him too.

"He'll be back on the track in a few weeks and then he'll have a few months to show everyone how he's going and what standards he's going to set for the season."

In other news, Port Adelaide has invited several local draft hopefuls and one interstate player to train with the team in the lead up to the NAB AFL Rookie Draft on December 7.

West Adelaide half-forward/midfielder Jonathon Beech, North Adelaide's Callum Hay and Port Magpies forwards Terry Milera and Sam Gray will all audition for a spot on the rookie list, as will Oakleigh Chargers goalkicker Tom Schneider, who was linked to the Power in the lead up to the national draft.
