The Claremont-East Fremantle clash at Claremont Oval on Saturday saw a large contingent of West Coast players engaged and a number of them put in glowing performances to enhance their chances of AFL promotion.
At the top of the list was wingman Bradd Dalziell, who continued his outstanding form, and played a leading role in the Sharks’ upset victory the Tigers. The indefatigable midfielder picked up 33 possessions and took six marks in a terrific individual performance.
Dalziell has racked up bigger possession tallies in other games without exerting as much influence over a contest as he did on Saturday.
He was ably supported by hard-nosed midfielder Koby Stevens who had 19 touches and five marks in another hard working and disciplined display. He and Dalziell also had 11 tackles between them and it was that tackling pressure which was important in the victory.
Young defender Jacob Brennan continues to evolve and found himself opposed to clever Claremont sharp-shooter Ian Richardson. The experienced Richardson still kicked three goals, but Brennan did his bit with some strong rebound for the Sharks.
Claremont pair Lewis Stevenson and Tom Swift were shining lights, with close to 50 possessions between. Stevenson played almost exclusively off half-back and a feature of his performance was his ability to hit targets with long kicks.
Swift played through midfield and also spent time in defence in a 26-possession effort and continues to show an ability to find the football.
While those players were under notice throughout, Gerrick Weedon might have suffered a let-down after his AFL debut last week against Essendon and Lewis Broome had a quiet day. Anton Hamp struggled to hit the scoreboard in the reserves.
Andrew Strijk, meanwhile, was a key factor in West Perth continuing their winning run with another solid effort at half-forward. He had 12 possessions, took five marks and kicked 1.1.
Peel trio Jordan Jones, Scott Lycett and Blayne Wilson had mixed days. Jones had 13 possessions, largely in defence, Lycett started with a bright first quarter, but faded, and Wilson also had 12 possessions in defence but did not exert a great influence on the game.
