A power-packed Suncoast Lions had most of their big guns firing as they slaughtered Broadbeach by 137 points in a one-sided affair at the Gabba on Saturday.

The Cats simply had no answer to the power and precision of a Lions side that has won five of its last six games by an average of 80 points.

Broadbeach threw everything they had at the Lions early but paid a heavy price for inaccuracy, kicking just 1.5 and trailing by 11 points at the first break.

It was all one-way traffic from there as Troy Selwood continued his late season surge with another dominant display in the midfield and Anthony Corrie capped his work off up forward with seven goals.

Corrie produced a brilliant 15-minute patch in the third quarter when he kicked three goals and set up several others with a strong attack on the ball and blinding speed to burn off opponents.

The Lions romped to a 25.20 (170)-4.9 (33) victory and showed once again they will be a strong premiership contender if their good run with injuries holds.

Scott Clouston and Lachlan Henderson kicked five goals between them, although Broadbeach defender Wade Dickson again showed his class.

Despite being bombarded by waves of Lions attacks, Dickson did everything in his power to stop his man and tried desperately hard to provide rebound for his side.

Mitch Andrews also worked hard in the ruck and around the ground, but the Cats were met with great resistance as soon as they got the ball to half-forward.

Irishman Pearce Hanley and in-form half-back Daniel Dzufer provided great dash and drive for the Lions, with Chris Schmidt and Phil Smith dominant in the midfield alongside Selwood.

Jesse Derrick, Dayne Zorko and Dan Skrinis tried hard to match the Lions at ground level but they were simply outgunned and outrun by a Lions side that is sweeping all before it at the moment.

It was the second biggest defeat ever inflicted on the Cats in their 12 seasons in the State League competition.

The Lions’ last game of the qualifying rounds will be against bottom side Redland in the curtain-raiser at the Gabba this Saturday.

They will play the knockout first semi final against Morningside at Coorparoo on Sunday 31 August.
