ESSENDON has received official approval from the Federal Government to build its new $26 million home base at Melbourne Airport.
Plans for the facility, announced by the Bombers in December last year, include two AFL-sized ovals, a running track, pool and gym, plus administration offices.
The Federal Government will contribute $6 million to the construction, with the State Government so far tipping in $1.7 million.
The club also hopes to receive $5 million in donations from its supporters to help finance the project.
The current fundraising tally stands at $370,000.
A statement posted on the Bombers' website on Friday said that in granting approval, the Federal Government had decided that, "the plan will not have any significant impact on aviation operations at the airport and is not expected to increase traffic in the area."
The statement also said: "No concerns were raised in submissions or by the public during the consultation period."
Essendon expects to move into the new facility before the start of the 2013 season.
