The international rules series has brought back some good memories for me. I was fortunate enough to be selected for the 2001 test series and representing Australia remains one of my career highlights.

Growing up it was always my dream to play in the AFL, but wearing the green and gold was not something that I could aspire to. There were no opportunities to play internationally, and I always looked on enviously at cricketers, tennis players and our Olympic athletes that had the chance to represent all Australians.

My chance came about in 2001 when we faced Ireland at home. The selectors told me during the AFL season that I was under consideration and while some critics may feel players do not take the series that seriously, I can assure you that I took the honour for what it was…the chance to represent my country against another team that was looking to wear their colours with equal passion. It remains one of the highlights of my career.

I got the call after the finals series and began to look forward to running out with supporters of all clubs behind me. It was a unique experience having supporters that normally give you a hard time on side, with everyone cheering for an Aussie victory.

We played the first game at the MCG in front of nearly 50,000 fans. The feeling of getting the Australian jumper, running out onto the ground and lining up for the national anthem was one I will never forget. The game was tight, with scores level at three quarter time, but credit to the Irish as they put one in the net in the fourth term, and that proved the margin of victory.

The second game was in Adelaide and both teams were fired up. Coming from Adelaide, my family was at the game and I was again proud to be in the line up. Ireland got off to a good start and we couldn’t pull them back. Many people remember a melee during this game but in the end the Irish deserved to win.

I think as the series continues the concept will gain even more acceptance. If you ask anybody that has played I am sure they will tell you the same thing – that playing for Australia is a great honour, a great experience and something that every player should aspire to.
